As much as the pandemics and social distancing have taken away our nights in the clubs, beers on the canal, and ability to eat pizza in an actual restaurant, Berlin podcasts are an awesome opportunity to consume all that content through an imaginary listening journey. Podcasts recreate our encounters with friends, the outdoors, going out, living life. Here we share some of our favorites:
See You in Sleep County is an English-language podcast of bedtime stories for adults created to whisk you away into the peaceful, relaxing realm of Sleep County. Each story is written by Jazz Meyer and is based on a real journal entry from her decades-long habit of chronicling her life. With the smooth, calming voice of Blake Farha narrating this weekly podcast, you’ll be lulled into a tranquil and somnolent state in no time. A new bedtime story is released every Sunday.
Tanti Table is a podcast in English discussing ”thinkers, anecdotes, news, taboos and intersectionality of Berlin and beyond.” In each episode, hosts Rhea Ramjohn, Armeghan Taheri, and Goitseone Montsho invite artists, scholars, and community leaders to bring cross-cutting perspectives to the Tanti Table. Past episodes feature discussions on self-acceptance, code switching, and dating in Berlin.
Radio Spätkauf is a podcast in English covering local Berlin news. It’s been around for years and always has entertaining stories and fascinating insights, and the hosts’ playful interactions are a joy to listen to. They’ve got their finger on the pulse when it comes to the issues that Berliners care about (whether it’s the rent freeze or vaccinations), so anyone living in the city will be able to relate. They’ve continued to do the podcast during quarantine times (with a bunch of funny lockdown episodes), so be sure to follow them for updates.
The Dead Ladies Show presents stories (in English and German) of amazing women from history and is a live podcast recorded (in normal times) at ACUD and is hosted by Florian Duijsens and Katy Derbyshire, who invite two special guests to showcase these women’s lives, works, and achievements. Past episodes included stories of Marie Curie, Susan Sontag, and Frida Kahlo, among other accomplished women – from ancient mathematicians to silent-movie stars to record-breaking athletes. Each truly educational episode is accompanied by a long-form blog with photos, videos and more.
In The Mind Takeaway, Mira and Peter, a leadership coaching and mentor duo, celebrate what it is to be human in an age of technology, digitization, and information overload. In each episode, they speak with experts on topics like transformative leadership, mentorship, collective creativity and more. Fresh episodes cover exploration of creativity, music culture and living in Berlin, and learning how to land your dream career.
If you’re looking to spend your downtime learning to harness your potential power and success, be sure to listen in!
