There is no doubt that we are fortunate, as we reside in the capital of a country where some of the world’s most transformative, artisanal cacao creations are born. Beyond the fact that chocolate serves as a source of pure euphoria, we are approaching a significant cultural cornerstone.
As the Easter season begins to permeate every corner of the city with themes of love, family, and togetherness, chocolate takes center stage once again: both through exquisitely crafted Easter Eggs and the timeless classics that lend sweetness to this period. As we step into April, we are turning our focus toward the city’s most indulgent treasure. Chocolate in Berlin, curated through the lens of The Columbist, brings together the city’s premier chocolate crafters and their unique artisanal experiences.

With a legacy spanning almost 150 years, being Berlin’s oldest chocolate manufactory, Sawade not only defines the history of chocolate in the city but also shapes its future. At Sawade, fine-flavor cocoa meets exceptional craftsmanship, followed by an artistic packaging process that truly expresses the Berlin spirit and beyond. The master chocolatiers’ latest release, the “Clare Owen” edition, celebrates the arrival of spring.
Designed exclusively for Sawade by the renowned illustrator Clare Owen, the boxes mirror the brand’s role as a bridge between the past and the future by blending classic motifs with modern elements. Inside, the collection offers an ode to tradition through a variety of delicious Easter eggs and the finest Sawade chocolates, while capturing the zeitgeist through popular classics like Knack- and Desserteier. In Berlin, chocolate is a prominent part of the city’s story; with Sawade, chocolate constitutes a story of its own, blending heritage with modern aesthetics and timeless flavors rooted in century-old, traditional recipes.

With its high dedication to natural superfoods that bring together health, enjoyment, and conscious sourcing, the Berlin-based goodmoodfood centers its motto on a simple idea: food, as much as it nourishes the body, should also support the mind and please the palate. Operating through this mindset, high-quality products from fair trade and sustainable agriculture offer a wide variety of pure, intense chocolate made of 100% cacao. Expanding over many versions of chocolate, from cacao beans to nibs, butter, powder, and cacao paste, the brand also offers unique drinking chocolate creations that go beyond a classic cup of cocoa.
Take Vital Mushroom Cacao as an example, where cacao and carefully selected functional mushrooms meet. Seasonally curated for the Easter season, goodmoodfood offers a few highlights: “Angry Gorilla”, a cacao snack supporting fairness in the chocolate industry, is the tastiest ethical statement. “The Wholy Bean!”, the first histamine-free chocolate made from raw dried cacao beans, is an innovative take on the world of chocolate. While “Cashew Clusters” is a perfect combination of cashews, cacao, and coconut sugar, Queen Beans is a definite recommendation, being the team’s favorite snack. What is really left to say? At goodmoodfood; a creative, ethical, and innovative touch to our favorite flavors exist altogether.

From New York-style cookies meeting Berlin’s excellent chocolate portfolio to truffles infused with actual truffles, and ginger-flavored fudges that re-manifest the recipes of the diaspora… At the Berlin Chocolate Festival, it is possible to encounter chocolate in every imaginable form. Recently organized once again by Berlin Italian Communication at Komplex Berlin, our team visited this hall dedicated entirely to cacao. Visitors could taste creations from the city's many different chocolate crafters or simply enjoy a drink in the beautiful weather. For both kids and parents, several workshops were hosted by the presenting artisans. If you missed this wonderful weekend-long festival, there is no need to worry — it has been organized annually since 2024, so you can already look forward to the next edition. We promise it is well worth the wait!
