It’s a not-to-be-missed event on the artistic scene this season: for the first time in fifteen years, an exhibition dedicated to Modigliani’s work is presented on German soil. The Italian artist, who lived in the 20th century, is now considered as a true icon of modern art. Especially famous for his signature style, recognizable at first glance – which brought him, in his day, both admiration and criticism from his peers – and for his short, tumultuous life as an artist, Modigliani still remains a subject oflegends.
Instead of presenting the artist through his influence on the Parisian artistic scene in the early 20th century, as several other exhibitions have already done, the Museum Barberini has chosen to spotlight the central role that emancipated women played in both his art and personal life. By painting bold and confident women at a time when women’s roles and identities were changing, Modigliani inspired an entire generation ofartists in Europe with his representation of lafemme moderne.
In total, the exhibition displays around one hundred works, cleverly juxtaposing a selection of Modigliani's portraits and nudes with pieces by other artists like Gustav Klimt, Jeanne Mammen, Pablo Picasso, Natalia Goncharova, Egon Schiele, and Paula Modersohn-Becker, among others, creating a dynamic dialogue within the exhibition space.
