My friend Bruno comes from a country in the south of the Alps. Like many people here, he hasn't been in Berlin for long. Being naked in front of strangers is not a natural thing for him. At least, it hasn’t been for a while.
Now in summer he likes to wear scent, carefully chosen clothes that he buys on MotzstraĂźe when he has money. When the month is drawing to a close and he has no money at all, it's doubly good to live in Berlin, too: Because here you could even wear a tablecloth with boots and sunglasses, and it would be okay.
If there is water or greenery, you could even wear nothing, because here, summer means FKK (Freikörperkultur) and that translates into moving together without clothes in leisure time, during sport or in nature. FKK has existed in Germany since the early 19th century. Back then it was about letting light and air reach the body: hiking, bathing, sunning together — a return to nature. Later, in the GDR, it also became a form of resistance against authority and their stiff suits, which people confronted with naked skin.Being naked is also about accepting your own body. After all, everyone pinches and rubs somewhere.

Still, there are rules before you take your pants off. You must not stare at others, you must not take photos, and you must always use a towel to sit on. The saying “No dick on the wood” applies in the sauna, and when chopping wood at the FKK campsite (e.g., at Bestensee). Good places for this are Teufelssee, the Müggelsee bathing beach, Halensee and many more!
Bruno asks, “But does that have anything to do with love or sex?” The answer isn’t very clear, it’s a yes and no at the same time. Sexuality traditionally has no place in FKK. It is a normal, respectful way of being with one another, and people enjoy being naked. In outdoor pools you may go top-free, and at the 111 lakes in the area you may go bottom-free as well.
“Bruno, but there is also sex outdoors. Where do you find that?”
At those same lakes or in well-known parks like the Tiergarten, Hasenheide or Plötzensee you can even cruise (active search for a spontaneous and often anonymous sex partner at certain places). These have traditionally been more gay spots: for love under the stars, but straight people may kiss there too. The cheerful demonstrations that wind through the city, “Free the Nipples”, are lovely, too. Nakedness is political: love between whom, which bodies do we show, what does society allow, what does it deny? All of that is part of being naked.
But back to Bruno… He does not want to demonstrate or do sports naked. Cruising interests him, so off to the park he goes. Bruno wanted to try it once, and went to the Tiergarten to the equestrian statue of the Amazon. There, people, especially women, meet on Wednesdays. They sent him a bit further to the gay meadow, where many wore little and it rustled promisingly in the grass.
How wonderful it can be to be simply yourself, without clothes, as Bruno (and hopefully you readers, too) did experience. Try it: for health, freedom or pleasure. Each person decides for themself, because here it goes: Welcome to the capital of the naked! Especially in summer, the ARD series is right: “Naked over Berlin.”
